Okay, maybe a silly question, but I am curious. On the real wood parts on the interior of a Catalina Sailboat, is the wood species Teak or Mahogany? I thought I knew, but I am doubting myself.

Don't say plywood please... :D That stuff has a paper printed veneer instead of a real wood veneer. I am curious about the fiddle pices next to the seat cushions, the drawer faces, etc.... I am looking at veneering some work for a boat interior and want to understand which will be a better match.

The fiddle pieces appear to be teak as does all of the wood trim on my C27. You were mentioning in another post about the rounded corner pieces on the counter top. I have a catalog from H&L Marine 2965 E Harcourt St Compton, CA 90221-5530 - (323) 636-1718. They make many of the pieces for Catalina at reasonable prices. If you call them they will send you a catalogue.

I appreciate the responses! I could have dove in under all the crappy finish someone else applied, but I was afraid I would destroy the material trying to find out what it was. I will call H&L later today.

I specifically need fiddle stock, (funny you asked) and I am experimenting with some old wood I have lying around. I disassembled a 26' Chris Craft Cavalier cruiser several years ago. The boat gave up some good wood, albeit what Chris Craft called "Philipine Mahogany" which really is not Mahogany but rather an un-related species that looks kind of like Mahogany. I rescued a length of board roughly 3" x 4" by 6' las night and got a strip cut from it with no screw holes that I am milling to fiddle rail dimensions. I will now carefully strip a piece of the original fiddle and re-stain it and the new material to see how close they are color-wise and grain-wise. I am hopeful!

I can tell you that Red Oak and Poplar cannot be coaxed there even with faux filler staining techniques... :)

The mahogany works pretty well. The grain is a little different but the color stains up nicely to match. I used it on the hatch slide rails and the companion rails on the Mac 25. Given the price of teak I would do it again. I am kicking myself for remaking the cockpit trim out of teak. They ran me about $80 for about 8 feet of 5"x 1/2" at H&L.
After staining is when I realized how much it looked like the mahogany I could have gotten for free. White oak is another good substitute but it does not match up in color.

I likethe cost of the wood I am using... Free is really good, except for those little shiny bronze circles in some of it.... :)

Carbide goes through a wooden boat's bronze screw like butter....
