Hatch / screen answer

Hi, Send me an e-mail and I'll forward a word document I've been putting together for the past five years that includes lots of parts info on the Hunter 28. It includes hatch and porthole info and how to get parts. Regarding the companionway, we got a roll of screen door nylon screening from a hardware store. We used the companionway slats as a template to cut a piece exactly the size of the companionway. I then cut 4 or 5 dowels the width of the screen, spaced evenly from top to bottom with about an inch free at the top and 1 1/2 - 2 inches free at the bottom. Measure the top one so it slides into the top (horizontal) slide. I attached them to the screen with a bead of clear silicon. Just slide the dowels into the slat track and you're good to go. This works great and rolls up nice and compact. For the top of the companionway slide, go to a hardware store and get a sidways adjustable screen designed for putting in an open window. You can lay it in groove of the top slider track and use the one above in the front. This screens in the entire companionway, top and front and gives you lots of air flow. For the bow hatch we cut out a square of brown paper that fit the interior of the hatch properly. We brought this template to a canvas shop and had them sew us a nice screen with velcro around the edges. (Shouldn't cost you more than $20. You could also make your own.) I used clear silicon to attach the other half of the velcro to the underside of the hatch. It looks very clean and professional and works well.
