Good Day,

I've just put on a Michigan MP 17RH11 3-blade propeller on my Legend 35.5 because I want more authority in boat control while docking.

I'm not a racer and therefore I'm not concerned about the loss of speed while sailing with this propeller; however, I do have a question on its use while under sail.

I read in a previous thread that the propeller control should be left in the forward position when the engine is not in use while under sail, as this will prevent the transmission from spinning with a free-wheeling propeller and thus prevent wear.

Does anyone have any information on what the best position for the propeller control while under sail?

Best Regards,

Rob

If it is a yanmar engine they published a service bulletin that you can also fine on this site or at yanmar site.

They said leave it in neutral. There isn't any wear because the transmission spins in lubricant.
There is another whole thread on people who damaged the shifting mechanism by leaving it in gear and trying to force it to neutral for starting. The pressure against the prop wouldn't allow smooth shift so they forced it.

I solved the whole thing by getting a feathering prop. The reverse performance greatly exceeds that of my fixed 3 blade

Good Morning Zoom

We have a 1992, 35.5 with a 3GM30 Yanmar, we were told to leave the transmission in reverse while under sail. A friend in Florida with a 1995, 35.5 does the same thing. Threads say one thing, individuals say another, who is the ultimate arbitor?

Our engines 3gm30's, are to be left in neutral, sys in the manual. I checked after a previous post someone checked the manual.

I bought my 35.5 prp with a 3 blade fixed 16x13, formerly a 2 bl 16x13, which is slightly over pitched, your 11 must be right on.

Since Yanmar issued a technical bulletin saying to leave it in neutral when underway or else your warranty will be voided, I'd kinda have to go with Yanmar. :)
