Peggy we have constantly had problems with "bio critters and plant life" being sucked into our manuel PH11 head. They get clogged in the bowl rim and become a real stink. I have installed a screen on the outside of the boat on our through hull,,,but 1 time it fell out and another time it became clogged and was tough to clean as I had to go swimming.. I was now looking at 2 possible solutions. 1). to install an in line stainer with clear cupped catch and install under the head sink ,,,then I could check occasionally. and empty when full. OR 2). Has anyone ever talked to you about installing a fresh water supply tank for the head intake???.....we have room under our V beth for a 20 gallon tank this would eliminate all intake problems since we would be using "Clean" water . We could refill anytime we are in our slip, this could also be attached to a "Y" valve in the event we ran out of supply tank water . It could be turned for raw water use.. What are your thoughts??? I know the inline strainer would be the cheapest solution..... We have been dealing with this for 2 years... we have a new holding tank and all new hoses 2 years ago.......but its the head that stinks and catches the debri...you can see it come out of the rim when you flush. PS. We are using KO in the holding tank which seams to do a fine job. any help would be appriciated. thanks Rob

A strainer would be the easiest solution...

Although keeping it clean could be a PITA. Have you considered upgrading to a toilet that uses pressurized flush water? It wouldn't cost you a whole lot more than installing a separate flush water tank and all the plumbing you'd need for it, including another fill.

Pressurized???

Peggie, do you mean as in electric toilet???... or adding a pump to the intake side?? And if I did pull the toilet,,, ( which unit do you recomend??)....By the way.....My wife would LOVE an electric unit.

Yep...I mean an electric macerating toilet

The best "bang for the buck" is the Raritan SeaEra...available as either a complete toilet or a "conversion" that includes everything but the bowl...both are available in both raw water and pressurized flush water versions. Check it out on the Raritan website at http://www.raritaneng.com The best prices I've found for it are at Fore And Aft Marine (google that name to get their website) and boatfix.com The only thing that requires any skill/knowledge is wiring it correctly...it's absolutely essential that you get that part right. The plumbing is no harder than plumbing a manual toilet. Your wife will LOVE it!

Thank You Peggie!

looks like we have a winner and since I will be able to use my existing bowl I can save a few $$ also. i take it from the pressurized statement that it means using "Fresh" from my presurized system...ie fresh water tanks....and it gives me the option for raw water from the bay? thanks Rob

You're welcome...yes...and...not quite...

Yes, it's designed to use water from the onboard fresh water supply...all the safeguards needed to protect the potable water supply are built into it. However, there is no toilet that allows you switch at will between pressurized water flush and sea water flush...you'll have to pick the version your want to go with. That is, unless you want to spend the additional money for a separate system (also made by Raritan, but unfortunately there's not much infor on it on their website) called the SeaFresh System. For it to work, you'd need the pressurized flush water version of the toilet AND a remote flush water intake pump, plus some additional plumbing and wiring...it just depends on how much you want to spend. :) But it might be worth it on a boat the size of yours if your potable water is in short supply and you only want to be able to flush with fresh water while in coastal weed and sea life infested waters...flush with sea water while at sea in deep clean waters.
