Harvey, You responded to Rob regarding when and how to reef. You mentioned "...close the gate and reef the main." I have a C27, 1982 standard rig and I do not have a gate. Does someone have an upgrade to add a gate? I can not reef my main properly since my main shackles get locked it ABOVE the gate. Please respond. I have been trying to think of a solution all season. (first season with Temptation II)

Reefing

The gate is where a side of the sail track is removed so the sail slides can be inserted into the track. The sail slides need some sort of device, such as a "sail stop" to prevent the sail slides fromn coming off the track. You are correct in saying the stop, being above the gate, prevents the reefing of the sail, unless you take 2 sail slides out of the gate. This makes for very awkward reefing, or taking out the reef. If someone could figure out a device that would close the gate, you would not have to remove the 2 slides, and in fact, you could bring your two reefing lines back to the cockpit and reef from there. If someone has an idea, let us know.

Reefing

Ron, and Harvey; I used an old section of mast to fashion two plates that mounted to the mast on each side of the gate that made it possible for the slides (slugs) to drop all the way down to the boom when furled, or reefed. To remove the main requires removal of these plates. This was done years ago, as I now have a C36. Mike
