Question about venting

Hi Peggie, I've modified my holding tank vent (installed a 1" vent to a thru hull) and use KO and CP and everything smells just peachy. However, I have a question and would appreciate your advice. The holding tank originally has a small (5/8") vent leading to a stanchion. This vent is tapped to the top of the holding tank. I added another vent (1") and tapped it into the inspection plate on top of the holding tank which leads to a thru hull out just below the gunwale on the port side. What I notice now is when the wind is off the port side, it seems to be rammed into my new vent (which I think is good), but because the original vent is still there, there is a slight odor that comes out of the stanchion vent and can be smelled in the cockpit. I figured by having the two vents was good because of the 'two open windows' theory, letting oxygen easily flow through, but now I'm not so sure. The only other idea is maybe my KO is old (I am finishing up the gallon I bought over a year ago), so maybe it's not so fresh?? Question: should I keep the original stanchion vent?? Thanks!! Roc

When was the last time you rinsed out the tank?

Keep the stanchion vent. Holding tank need to be rinsed out regularly...otherwise, what's clinging to the walls above the surface can get a bit ripe--and since it's only a faint odor, that's prob'ly what you're smelling...'cuz if your K.O. is "over the hill," it would be VERY ripe. When I start to smell anything, I know it's time to follow the pumpout with a fresh-water fill--liberally laced with C.P.--till it overflows the vent and let the water run till what's coming out the vent runs clear.
