Re: 2004 Hunter 36...

I am replacing the round gasket that goes between the bowl and the base and I expected a simple job - undo four nuts holding bowl to base, swap the gasket, and tighten down the nuts. I was surprised to find that the four nuts holding the bowl are on bolts that are not "captive" and turn freely.

It seems like I have to un-bolt the whole head assembly from the floor and lift/tilt it to get underneath the base to hold the bolt heads while removing the bowl.

Is this correct?

Is there a better way?

Thanks... Andy

Just wanted to give a quick update on what I did. This is simple stuff but since I asked, maybe others will find it slightly useful :)

I unbolted the toilet from the floor, disconnected the main waste line at the joker valve, and took off the raw water line. The toilet was then free and I tried a few approaches to getting at the bolts holding the bowl to the base.

First approach: By lifting and tilting the toilet I was able to get a 10mm socket with 3" extension onto the bolt heads from underneath. Then a 10mm wrench on the nuts. It worked but was a bit awkward.

Second approach: After a while I figured it was much easier to empty any remaining liquid into a bucket and turn the toilet upside down on a small step, so the pump cleared the floor. Then it was easy to line up the base and bowl, and bolt it back together.
