My father-in-law bought an 1977 O'day 25 that had been sitting for a couple years, so we are doing a little clean up/polish/brightwork to get it ready to be put in the water in a week or so (it's up on a cradle at the marina now).
Anyway, the local boat guru, who's restoring a few older boats, walked us through the boat, and one thing he pointed out is that the main sink drain didn't have a shutoff on the line, and he said that it was possible for it to get suction under the wrong conditions and sink the boat.
My father-in-law is trying to fix this, and it's fixable, but a little awkward, and in the process of loosening the pipe we popped the through-hull fitting an 1/8" or so of the inch off the bottom of the boat. So I have a couple questions:
1. Do any of you with O'day 25's have drain line shut-off valves on your main galley sink? I keep thinking that if the boat didn't come with a valve, they must have designed it so that it didn't need one.
2. When we reseat the through-hull, which is brass or bronze by the look of it, do we need to use any sealant or adhesive, or will it seal on it's own when it's tightened down, since the other side of the fitting under the sink is sealed in to the water pipe?
Thanks a lot, I appreciate the help!
