I have a 93 Hunter 28 which has the OEM knotmeter. It registers very minute amounts like if I'm sailing at 3.9 on the GPS it maybe says .4 knots.I want to do maintenance on it without pulling the boat. Can it be done? and how? Thanks

Go For It

First time you remove the impeller can be very frightening as lots of water enters. Works well to surround the area with large towels, work with hands under the towels and most of the water will be captured. I have plug in one hand and fill hole immediately. Estimate I do it with less than pint of water entering. Just takes practice but doing so overcomes fear of the water entering. Make sure you have correct manufacturer's size plug. First time I used mine I quickly discovered previous owner had left an incorrect size so I suspect he never removed the impeller.

Okay,one thing I forgot

Is the impeller under the front berth?

Knot Meter

Sounds like your knot meter transducer may be the problem. Several months I pulled ours which had the same symptoms. Sent it to the repair shop (DMI Marine Inc. in Pocasset,Maine) where it was bench tested and determined to be inoperative. They sent a replacement for about $120. Their web site is dmimarine.com

Hi Paul, the impeller on our 1991 H28...

was beneath the forward sole plate, just in front of the keel/bilge sole plate, not beneath the forward berth. Your fresh water tank is located there. Your transducer impeller just may be gunked up from sea critters, preventing it from spinning freely. If you have a diver friend they might check it for you in exchange for a free lunch. That's what I've done before. Terry

Pulling impeller in water-

Hi Paul- On our 1998 H280,you can unscrew the impeller and pull it out while in the water. On this model (1998), there is a flapper valve that once the impeller is pulled ,quickly stops the small flow of water in.I have done this and cleaned the gook off the paddle wheel several times to get the knotmeter working again. I suggest you check to see if you have the same set-up. If not,as Steve says be ready with a rag to stop the flow until you put the cap on. Good luck! Pete ~Eastern Sky~ H280

You better have a plug!

You pull the old transducer out and slam the plug in ASAP! Why do it? Just use the GPS until you pull it out! If you do do it. You need to push the paddle wheel pin out then clean the pin and the paddle wheel real good! Good Luck!

Damage control Mat

I have the same thru hull paddel wheel and depth sounder. A friend of mine brought over his damage control mat. Basically a very strong 4' X 4' sheet of rubber I think he called it hermiculite or something like that. Line attached on the corners. Lower the mat on the stern or bow which ever is easier to slide the mat over the thru hull and tie off tight to the toe rail and then pull the plug. some water will gush through but the mat will suck up to the hole and stop the water. Worked great. Also a great thing to have on board in case some one runs into you and breaches the hull. Good luck. Jonathan.

I agree...Just Do It

Just have a plug ready to go in the hole. I just use one of the tapered wooden plugs I have on board. The gush of water is quite impressive but only concerns you the first time. During the summer months I have to clean my impeller once a month or so. Regards, Tom
