Does anyone know of any keel boats in the 26'-32' range that have a full aft queen berth like my MacGregor 26S. My wife loves the sleeping arrangements on our Mac but she can't get used to the tenderness. We need a more stable boat, preferably with about a 3'-4' draft.

You might want to check out some the Catalina's with the optional wing keel.
Maybe the 310. The 28 has also always been popular with several couples at our club, but I am not sure of the berth size.

Rough idea of what you want to spend? Most mid-sized cruisers DESIGNED (not just built) after say 1986-90 have big queen size (or close) berths under the cockpit.

true queen size will be tough, but something approaching full size is quite possible. The real issue is getting in and out without clobbering the spouse

Our Catalina 310 has a queen sized berth in the forward cabin, and it has a real mattress. We live aboard and find it to be very comfortable.

Lancer 27PS has a queen size berth in the aft of the boat. Jump over to my site and take a look.

We have a Bavaria 31 Cruiser - small boat, lots of room. Extra large rear berth, and V-berth can sleep two quite easily. Draft is 1.89 m. and she is very stable. A strong boat too.

A Catalina 28 MKII has a very large aft just about the same size as the Mac. A Beneteau 311 also has a large aft it is bigger than the Catalina 28. Both boat fit your draft requirements. (I had a MacGregor, a Catalina 28 MKII and now a Beneteau 311)

Beneteau First 310. Mine is in the water at El Dorado. Probably won't bring it to Cheney until October. But, you are welcome to contact me if you want to come look.

My last boat was a Hunter 340, which had a huge stern berth, including a stand-up area at the entrance. The similar H310 appears to have a similar berth arrangement, and the ones I've seen advertised show a 4 ft draft. My 340 was admiral friendly, and sailed pretty well - had no trouble hitting hull speed, but reefing early and often was the way to go.

That sugar scoop transom would slam the water, and I do mean slam, making it tough to sleep in unless the water was well protected. That's something to look out for with many of those broad-bottom boats, or at least with the Hunters. :)

One of the problems is that not all queen births are created equally. It is relatively easy to find a birth that has the same dimensions of a queen but most require that one person climbs over the other to get in and out. With the McGregor you could access from either side. This was a big point with my Bride when it came to picking out our new boat.

As Tom pointed out, the Catalina 310 has a forward queen birth that meets this requirement. We live on ours also (well for the summer now but soon to be full time). We feel the boat is very comfortable for a couple and this is one of the key reasons. I believe some of the older Hunter 34s have a rear queen birth that would meet this as well. Other than that you are out of luck.

Good luck and fair winds,

Jesse

most of the aft berths you sleep sideways, so if you need to go to the head, you have to crawl over the forward sleeper.

The macgregor 26 (classic) is closer to a California king mattress than a queen...
I got a memory foam topper, and just cut the rear corners to make it fit...

I think the tartan 34 and 37 aft berths you sleep with your head facing forward, but the inside person will still wake up the outside person going to the head at night.

Just a thought so don't shoot me.

What if you hung a cast iron keel from a 25 from the 26s and filled the ballast? Would that resolve the tenderness?

Might affect the trailer ability tho. .

Seems to me that someone "weighted" their 26S - put metal in the swing keel instead of letting it fill with water. That should make it less tender. Don't know about its affect of trailering tho.
