Hi there,

I have found good pricing on mattresses from Portland Mattresses in Maine. The challenge is I am in Portland OR. Does anyone have handy a pattern or measurements they have made for a mattress in the quarter berth of a 1986 Hunter 31 that they can share with me so I can have the mattress made and shipped to me?

Thanks!

Are your existing mattresses missing?

I can try to measure mine this weekend

Chip, if you are able to get those measurements, I'd like to have them also. My mattress is missing as well.

My advice: Make a butcher paper pattern of your boat. you will be spending a lot of money and want it right.

Also, is the mattress thicker than the current mattress? Does it require tapering? Will the thickness be an issue? Do you need it to fold or be split?

I appologize. I was at the boat all weekend remodeling the head, and totally forgot to take the measurements. I am planning on going back this evening to work some more on the tile top I am putting on the vanity. I will try to take some measurements and pictures while there.

Butcher paper template may be a good suggestion as there may be differences even in boats of the same year. Mine is three separate cushions two long ones split to go around the rudder post, and a short rectangular one that covers the hatch over the stuffing box and the plywood bridge that goes over the short walkway to the quarter berth. I do not know if this removable bridge is standard, or was added by the PO of this boat, but it adds extra cushion space to the berth. I also have one in the V berth that I am not sure was stock. Do you guys have these berth extensions on your boats?

I do, in both berths, though my v-berth cushion for the extension there is not rounded on any edges. It fits a straight-sided gap in the other two cushions.

I've never seen cushions for the aft quarterberth, so pictures would be a real learning experience.

Hi Pateco, I too have both of those extensions. My v-berth has a custom mattress that is super comfy. Portland (ME) Mattress Co sent me a kit to measure up the quarter berth, so will be trying that out this weekend. Will let you know how it goes. Sean

Finally cleared out the quarter berth enough to take pictures.

I did not take measurements since after looking at it I don't like the design, and figured it would be better if you templated and designed your own

Thanks for the pics Pateco. I did not realize that the cushioning went all the way to the back even behind the rudder shaft. I am going to go for one contiguous piece with hinges that will allow be access. I will share pics when I have it all done. Cheers, Sean

I dont think one piece would be good. I would break it up into at least two pieces. I have an access into my water tank, and a hatch over the stuffing box. both of these are hard to get to with my current cushions since they are so large and unwieldy, I believe that a single hinged cushion would be even more of a pain to work around.

Pateco, in that picture of your aft berth I see the there is an opening box enclosure around your quadrant system. On my '84 H31 this is a fiberglass cover screwed up into place. Did you make this box? Do you think it is original to your boat? Thanks!

@pateco, I too am curious about that box, since my 1983 copy has neither that box nor a fiberglass panel hiding the steering cables. Looks like good storage for very light things. Please tell us more.

This was on the boat when I got her. I am not sure if it is original, but it also contains the wiring loom for my pedestal.

The hatch just drops down on a piano hinge when unlatched, so I don't think I would store anything in there. I can try to get better pictures of it, but I won't be at the boat until the weekend.

@pateco , I'm guessing a previous owner installed that. Looks like they did a good job and it is a functional improvement from original. Also it looks like the "walls" (side of the hull) has had the carpet removed and been nicely cleaned. That is on my list of projects. I also note the scupper drain hose has been replaced (it is not the corrugated original). I have new 148 hose in the mail coming for replacing mine as well.

Right now I have the separating wall out between the two compartments. It was rotted because of leaks the previous owner never fixed. Lots of room now, but I'll put a replacement in for safety. However, I want to make it removable (or parts of it removable) for easy access to systems on the other side.

We use the aft berth for visitors. Most recently, after the birth of our son (our first child) my mother in law flew into town and spent 10 days in that berth! It works.

I don't know if it ever had carpet back there. The quarter berth hull-side wall is covered in some sort of foam backed vinyl. It seems to attract mildew like crazy, but it cleans easily.

I do have carpet above the lee berths, and in the v-berth. See picture below.

I ripped most of my "wall carpet" out, it was mildewed. Haven't replaced it yet.

@Manly - please post about replacing that bulkhead, especially if you put doors in it to the starboard side. Mine is teak, but the bottom edge is in bad shape from leaks.
