PY 23 vs. O'Day 23

I have the opportunity to choose between a '78 O'Day 23 and a '79 Paceship PY 23 (both are centerboard models) both seem to be in nearly identical condition and price. I tend to like the layout of the cabin in the O'Day better, the centerbaord line runs up into the cockpit vs. into the cabin and I like the sliding sink and table set-up under the cockpit which seems to give the O'Day cabin a lot more room, of course this takes away from the storage underneath the cockpit for other things. The PY23 has a reputation for being ruggedly built but with all the O'Days out there, they must be pretty reliable too. The O'Day is about 500 lbs. heavier. The PY 23 has touches, like the stainless toerail, which gives it a very substantial feel in comparison to the molded toerail for the O'Day. All in all, they both seem very similar, if you've had any experience with both (or have had either really good or bad experiences with either model) please let me know, I'm going to decide in the next couple of days. Thanks! I can also be e-mailed offline at stevepaxton@juno.com

O'Day 23

I presently own an O'Day 23, although I just took ownership of a 89 Catalina 30. I owned the boat for one year and would reccomend it without hesitation. It has great classic lines, no centerboard trunk to get in the way in the cabin. Can easily sleep 4, has a small but functional galley, head and water system. Parts are easily available from Rudy at D&R Marine. If he doesn't have them then most items are still available from the major manufacturers, as O'Day used quality suppliers. The boat is easily rigged and can be sailed by one person. I had a great outboard, Roller Reefing and had a great time on the boat. The only problem for my family was that it was just too small. We wanted to do overnights, but with 2 small children it was tough. Plus all of our friends had 2 kids, and when you put 4 adults and 4 children on the boat..... Good luck, I'm sure whatever boat you choose you will have an enjoyable experience.

Both boats

are recommended in Practical Sailor's 2 volume publication "Practical Boat Buying", and both are subjects of specific reviews there, but the O'Day is described in greater depth. One aspect I like to check is cockpit seating comfort (seatback angle, etc). That's where you will be spending most of your time.
