I have a 2000 model H-260 and the clam cleats do not work well for the jib sheets. I would like to replace them with PX Powercleats. My question is, do I place the PX cleats where the current clamcleats are located or do I place them where the current horn cleats are located?

Horn cleats, I'd say

The 260 owners will likely reply too but I'm pretty sure it's the horn cleat location because nobody mentioned using the adapters that would be required at the cam cleat location (assuming the camcleat bolts are crossline to the sheet; the horn and PX bolts are inline to the sheet). I wanted to remind you to be prepared that compared to the 240 and 23.5, the horn cleats on the 260 are placed further forward (ie more distance to the bulkhead edge that drops down into the cockpit) such that some or all of the 260 owners found that they needed risers under the powercleats to get enough height above the deck to snap the line down to lock the cleat. On my 95H23.5, the horn cleat was close to the edge and no riser was required. I can work the powercleat fine from anywhere in the cockpit. I just put a PXB on my mainsheet (thanks George!) but won't get to test it until next season.

PX Powercleats

There is enough in the archives on this subject to write a book. There are slightly different approaches to this task. Suggest you read it all. Yes, the holes match exactly and I you'll need the wedge that comes with the cleats. Also, just to make it tougher to do, I installed long bolts so that they would go through to the underside where I added washers and nuts on the underside. Not sure this is really necessary tho. The winch access panels make it easy to reach the underside, but you have to have long/skinny fingers. I used silicon to keep the washers attached to the underside while I put the nuts on. I forget the exact length of the bolts but they were at least 2" long. Just make sure they come through underneath. I believe there is a plate imbedded in the fiberglass where the horns are. I'm also looking at using the PX cleats on the vang, reef line, and outhaul and running them back to the cockpit via turning blocks.

For a rookie at parts, exactly what do you call the things that you used to replace the horn cleats and a page in west marine? many thanks

Spinlock PX0812

The 0812 is the large size. The 0812 refers to the line size range of 8mm to 12mm. (7/16" max). I found that 1/2 is indeed too big and had to buy new 7/16" jib lines.

Spinlock PX Cleats

There is quite a bit of info on the Spinlock Powercleats in the archives. For the Record, this is what you need: For the mainsheet: SPNPXB0812; Spinlock PX Powercleat, Single, w/Block adapter, 5/16 to 1/2in. Item Price: $41.95 For the jib sheet: SPNPX08121; Spinlock PX Powercleat, Single, 5/16 to 7/16in. Quantity: 2. Item Price: $29.95 Sailnet.com had the best price, but I'd still shop around. Both Powercleats work as advertised, but since you can't use the winch to tighten the jibsheets, you have to wear gloves. For singlehanding it helps to lengthen the jibshees to 30 feet each side. The wedges are optional but I think they work better with them. The mainsheet Spinlock mod also is a great improvement. No more tugging and pulling to get the mainsheet cleated.

Stock configuration for Jib cleats

I've been scouring the archives on this subject (Spinlocks). My question is what is the stock configuration for the jib sheet cleats? Is it a jam cleat? Can't seem to find a good description of a stock setup or a good pic of one. On my 2002 260 I have 4 rope clutches on the deck (main, jib, spin halyards and centerboard)2 on each side. Outside the port clutches I have a cam cleat and fairlead. Same setup on starboard except the cam is inside the clutches. Horn cleates on outside of both cabintop winches. I originally thought the previous owner replaced the horns with the cams but the horns are still there. I am not sure what was originally where the cam cleats are or is this the stock setup? The manual just says sheet stoppers(jam cleats?) and they refer to the horn cleat as the jib cleat. Everyone seems to be replacing the horn cleats with the spinlocks I plan to replace the cam cleats with spinlocks. Definetly replacing the main sheet cam with a spinlock. The horns are currently unused, I am thinking of replacing them with some type of setup for the spinnaker sheets, but I have only flown it once and not sure what I need yet.

Yes but the 26 and the 260 are not the same

The horn cleat is right near the starboard and port edge where as the cam locks are located between the winches and the hatch. So I'm not sure that it will work???
