My ST 4000 is throwing me into a 360 and I've tried everything to get it to work and sent it into the dealer to have it checked and they don't have a clue what is wrong... So I've decided to put in a new unit from scratch. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what would be a good one to use, or experience in where to place the compass so it has the least amount off problems? Thanks in advance for your help. I miss my little buddy at the helm. My last trip to the Keys 22 hours down and 26 hours back was a long way to hold that wheel. Capt. Paul West s/v Magic Wind #714 1986 31' Hunter

Paul, My comment is most likely not what you want to hear but I installed an ST4000 on our '87 Hunter 31 about three years ago and, after some initial tweeking, it hasn't missed a beat. I wish I could suggest something you might try but I can't. I'm suprised that the U.S. factory rep can't help you. There are mucho ST4000s out there that are doing great and seems to me that it would be in Raymarine's best interest to keep them working that way. Have you checked their web site?

Thanks Dave...

Dave: I sent the head to Raymarine and they bench tested it and said they couldn't find a problem with it, but for $200 they would change the mother board. I asked them if that would solve the problem and they said they couldn' t be sure. So they suggested to just pay the $50 bench fee and they would send it back and to look into buying an upgraded model. Since this is an old unit, I opted for that and am looking for a good deal on a new or refurbed unit but thought I'd check up here and get the opinions of everyone up here before I spend the $700 to $900 to put in another one. Thanks for the response. I remember when my 4000 treated me well too so I'm not adverse to putting in another newer one. Paul

Paul, Have you checked to see if the ST6000 control head will work with your Auto Pilot? I'm assuming it will but you never know. My 4000 control head still works but the LCD readout is toast - I can punch it into auto pilot and it works fine but I can't read the screen to do any calibrations etc. I was thinking about replacing it ($600+ for the 6000 head, OUCH!).
