The term "push pit" for the stern guard rails is totally incorrect. The right name is Taff rail.
The term Push pit has come from a misconception of terms. The pulpit (all one word) as Steve states is the name of the guard rail at the bow. It is not a Pull pit. It was named for its shape, being similar to the pulpit of a church from whence a preacher gives his sermon. It is not related to the cock pit, that name coming from the small sunken area in which cock fights were held. As there is no "pull pit", ergo there is no "push pit."
