New to sailboat ownership. What is the purpose of the "locker" on the port side of the swim platform? Has a drain hole that is below the waterline so it fills up and drains frequently.

I've put my boat wash stuff there as well as a small gas tank for the outboard. On the latter make sure the tank cover is tight so no water can get in.
