purpose of hoses?

Although I have a 281, I suspect that some other models have the same thing. There are 2 corregated hoses, that are similar to the vinyl hose used to vent a clothes drier, running from the engine compartment to a thru-hull near the engine exhaust. These hoses are like vinyl coated slinkys and are not connected to anything in the engine compartment. I assume that they are there to vent engine fumes from the aft cabin but I'm not sure. I want to replace my sanitation hose and these things are really in the way. Anyone know for sure what they are and impotrant they are?

exhaust hose

Bill, since diesel engines are a closed system they require a ventilation system to remove diesel fume vapors. The American Boat and Yacht Council has a complete standard on this (P-1.) Removing the ventilation hoses will not allow the vapors to escape and you could be creating a hazardous situation. My suggestion would be to work around them or since they are fairly flexible see if you can move them a bit. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Charlie
