purpose of "front shroud"

What is the intention or purpose of the front shrouds, O'Day 28? Does a front shroud absolutely have to be mounted through the deck to a bulkhead? Our main port/starboard shrouds ARE mounted to a bulkhead (or similar) inside the boat behind the settee. Our front shroud is mounted thru the deck with 2 huge bolts and a metal backing plate. As posted in another post, a canning or bump has appeared at the front shroud. Can that be reversed? How?

Thats a questionable build decision in an otherwise very fine boat. With her masthead rig, the O28 needs the forward lowers to keep the mast in column and induce mast pre-bend. With no bulkhead below it, your only option would be to repair and damage caused, and then install a much larger backing plate.

Now, it you want to get really fancy, you could tab a fixture to the hull, and run a SS rod between that and the deck fitting. That would transfer the load to the hull. This is the way many small Beneteau's do chainplates, like on this 235.

Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate it. Any chance I can get a close up pic of that extension rod to see where/how it might be attached at the top and the bottom?

Yep.... Pix of the top plate and upper rod. Not shown, turnbuckle body, lower rod, lower plate.

The top (under deck) plate has a 'bump' with a hole in it meant to take the rod, that has a knob on the upper end. That allows to be angled correctly with ease. This plate has bolt holes that match the top deck fitting. Screwing the whole thing tight transfers the shroud load to the rod.

The lower rod fitting is the same, but secured to a tab on the hull. Your biggest job might be to find a good spot for that. On the Bendys its designed into the hull and structural. Both the upper and lower rods have threaded middle ends. A turnbuckle is placed on then and tightened, transferring the whole load to the hull.

I agree that in principle the rod arrangement is a better design than the backing plate, and it's essentially how the uppers and aft lowers are secured on the O'Day 28. I would be curious though on the implications of retrofitting a 28 to carry the load of the forward lowers to a part of the hull that may not have been designed for it, rather than the deck which was.
