Oday 30 Baltimore
We are looking at an Oday 30 1983 that seems in relatively good shape. No leaks, good bright work, furling head sail and loose footed main, wheel steering, 16 hp Universal diesel, so so instruments, and a dodger and bimini.
What are your thoughts of this boat and what problems should I be looking for. We haven't done survey and sea trials yet so I would like some info before I stroke a check and write a contract. Help!

oday 25 branched oaks
I just bought a 1977 oday 25. Roller furling with a 150 genoa, two jibs, a nice spinnaker, etc. etc. It was sitting on the trailer for three years, outside and uncovered. Snow and rain etc. I took a rubber handled hammer and tapped all over the deck, inspected the chainplate penetrations, and the electrical system. The hull is absoulutely tight, but I had to totally rewire the boat. Took only about 8 hours for me and my son to do.. anyways thats what I checked. Fire up the enginge check the oil and ask for all service records. Make sure the water/fuel seperators are there and ask owner about his service of those filters. You can also check the bilges for cleanliness. That can give you some idea of any leaks. Take a rag and wipe the halyards if you have any cloth strands left, you willneed to replace it. and check the turnbucles, any bent fittings bolts etcl will give you an idea how well owner has kept things up hope this helps and goodluck

Not an expert here, but I think close inspection in the keel is warranted.

I found some discussions about keels falling off mid-80's boats and sinking.

Be sure to do some serious research in this area.
Google and review all findings of such instances.

If my memory serves, the problem oriented around the layup schedule around the keel stub and fatiguing fiberglass.

Hope your getting a great deal; there are sure some out there.

Regards and good luck,
Mitch

One of my friends bought an O'Day 30 a few years ago and he loves that boat. Check it out good, if it's OK and you like it, go for it.

My boat has an encapsulated Keel, don't know about the 83s
things to ck;
all battery cable connections. we had to solder some of them. Fuel tank may have pin holes in the bottom and slowly soaking the plywood support.

That's a nice boat you have there- I have a 25, and like it a lot, but the ROOM you have is just great! My wife wants a stove like yours. Am trying to figure out where to put it.
