I am about to purchase a 1988 Cape Dory mkII. I would like your opinion on this boat. As the former owner of a CD25 , I am looking forward to a large cabin. Thanks.

As a CD owner you are well aware of the quality of the boat and are probaby a better judge than any of us. You don't tell us the size of your new boat. Cape Dory's are not the roomiest boats per their loa, but they are great sailing yachts and well built.

I believe the CD 30 MK II is much roomier than the CD 30 it replaced. The few that I've sailed on were great boats in all weather conditions. While it won't be as fast close hauled as many fin-keelers, it will still do well when the wind is over 12 kts. I've heard that a few owners who had Volvo engines had some problems so I'd advise a thorough survey to include the engine. Some also had serious gel-coat cracking in the forward deck where the cabin meets the deck and over to the adjoining stanchion. Also ought to be survey item. See this url for more info:

Mike,

I helped deliver one of these boats from Annapolis to Jersey City this past summer. Up the Chesapeake, thru the C&D, down the Delaware, and up the Jersey coast. Both under auxiliary power and sail she did well. From the Delaware Bay until we got to Liberty Landing in Jersey City we had SE winds between 15-30 knots with a few thunder storms off the Jersey coast. The boat handled it very well with a crew of three. Nice boat IMO.

I once owned a CD 30 cutter rig. Not the fastest boat on the water, but very easy to sail and walk about on while alone. Construction is quite good, but some Cape Dorys have a problem with deck crazing (anywhere). This can lead to wet balsa which is used under the nonskid. Fixable, but a job.
If the boat surveys ok, I am sure you will enjoy it.
