I am in looking for any and all info on a slip for my hunter 290 in the punta gorda area,my retirement home is being built as we speak and should be ready in early 2006 in port charlotte. So am wondering what do people do that don't live on the water with their own slip,is burnt store open to none owners, can I purchase a condo slip any place or are none boaters with slips available to rent. I have a private slip not in a marina here in ny and the slip fee is cheap compared to what marina's charge but we don't have all the extra's that you get at a marina's,right now what we have is fine but when we retire to florida we will have more time to enjoy the boat. I would like to be in a marina or a private slip and than join a sailing club, any help or info would be very appreciative. nick

Burnt Store Marina

Nick, Burnt Store Marina is south of Punta Gorda. There are still slips to be rented. They cost $11.00 per foot with a 35 foot minimum. See the link attached. Fisherman's Village is rebuilding its slips this year. They will probably have slips next year. Charlotte Harbor Sailing

Nick, Bill told you right. The 2 marinas he noted are the only marinas on Charlotte Harbor. Punta Gorda Marina is only a few miles north up the Peace River but there is a bridge with 45 feet vertical clearance. Fishermen's Village Yacht Basin closed several years ago and we have been anxiously awaiting it to re-open if only to have a nearby diesel fuel source. Burnt Store Marina is about 11nm from Port Charlotte via the water and about 19 miles via highway (which takes about 30 to 35 minutes). Most boaters keep their boats docked behind their waterfront homes. Your post would indicate that that is not your situation. It is possible to find private docks for rent. One way to find a slip is to watch the local paper ads ( http://www.sun-herald.com ). The most active Charlotte Harbor Sailing club is the Punta Gorda Sailing Club - http://www.pgscweb.com That's a fact, but I am biased because I am a member and also the webmaster of this site. I hope this helps. John
