Pulpit

Jack,
From my limited experience 'bent' can be straightened, but 'kinked' requires cutting out and replacing a section. I think the same goes for masts.

I'd be interested to know how you make out. My Ballad pulpit was bent and I've straightened it, partly by clamping some 4x4 posts across the bend and forcing it straight. But the pushpit has a bad kink where the mast hit it on the way down (semi-controlled mast removal by others) and will require cutting in a new section, unfortunately right on a bend.

The mast also has a very slight bend (about 1/2" deflection in 8') and the sail track slot is also damaged, but repairable. I'm going to consult a professional first, but will probably end up putting it between two large trees and gently persuding it back into alignment ... I hope!

Same thing happened to mine, late last season, but im going to use the opportunity to weld up a new one with integral corner seats, and a swing up center, to make it easier to get out of the dinghy on the transom and back in the boat.

Jack,
I took the initial bend out while the pulpit was still bolted to the deck. The starboard side was bent over further towards the starboard. After taking it off I made a template of the bolt holes on deck and transfered them to a piece of plywood in the shop. This allowed me to keep checking the foot locations as the remainder of the bends were removed, with the pipe clamped in a vise and a pair of 2x4's clamped over the bent part, long enough to get good leverage. It took a bit of tweaking to get all 4 feet to sit on the floor together ... I hope the floor is level!

It's not perfect, but pretty close, and will certainly be OK for me. My only concern is that the tubing has been weakened by the bending and straightening. Only time will tell.

Jack, You might consider replacing it with another make. Lots of stuff out there that can be adapted for different uses. Lyric had the origional style pulpit and we replaced it with one from a Hallberg Rassey. It looks like the later model Vega's only more substantial. It was a fairly easy installation. As an aside when my old mainsail was destroyed I bought a used Catalina 25 main as an interim replacement. It was a surprisingly good fit. Walt
