I am going to install a roller furling unit. The pulpit is open at the top rail and closed at the bottom rail. This bottom rail comes to close to the forestay (about 2" - 3"), not enough room for the drum on the roller furling. I did not want to hike the whole assembly up. The asetetics of having the sail that high off the deck is not appealing, not to mention the actual area cut from the sail will. I was wondering if there is a retrofit idea for the pulpit.

Using the right furl

I have a 82, but about twelve years ago I installed a CDI roller furl, it's tight, when the sail is fully wraped and it may rub but I've had no problems with it, or with that aspect of the function, what You want to do is have the drum section, positioned between the cross section bar and the bow cleat, this will allow You to set the REEL line at a good minimal angle to the first block located on the toe rail, now bigger drum furling systems may look more impressive, but they hold more loops and can cause binding, the easiest system I've seen is the continous loop with no spool where the line can foul, measure the distance from the stem bow plate to the cross section bar and see what sys. can be best applied.

Been there; Done this.

I installed a CDI Furler on my 81 h27 a couple of years ago. I also encountered the same problem...not enough space for the drum. Here is what I did. I measured the center line (CL)distances between the points where the pulpit was bolted thru the deck. I then built a jig out of plywood stock with holes bored to the above dimensions. I then removed the pulpit and installed it on the jig. I then took the whole thing to a guy who specialized in stainless marine repairs and had him cutout the brace that was in the way, move it forward and weld it back in place. Modification costs were <$40. I then reinstalled the pulpit and had plenty of room for the drum housing. I could of had the guy come to the marina and do it on the boat, but it would have been more costly and I needed to remove and rebed the pulpit any way. Furler works great, leaks got fixed. Good luck with yours!
