We need to get our 40.5 Hunter from Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands to Newport, RI. We would love any help. Thanks in advance! Does anybody recommend a good reference book for such a trip? What charts do we need? Do you have to have radar? Is there a "cruising guide" for such a trip? What are the best times to make the trip? How long does it take? Whats the best route? Any other pieces of information or suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!!!!

Ocean sailing with no experience is risky

If you have no or limited ocean sailing experience you should hire a captain and crew for him. I have done the trip up and back 6 or 8 times- I've lost track. You can have no wind or 45kts one time lasting for 4 days. Look at the West Marine Carribean 1500 rally. They go south in early Nov. I am not sure whether there is an organized trip back north in the spring. If I were you I would leave the boat down there and bring it North in early May 2003. Otherwise I would island hop to FL and motor up the intercoastal. We are in the height of hurricane season. Not the time to be in the open Atlantic far from land especially in a Hunter.
