It has been about 4 years since I have sailed Puerto Penasco (rocky point)-Sailing is generally good with mild (10) breezes. IN one day you can go from mild to wild, ask local fisherman or the Port Capitan for the forecast, AND BELIEVE IT. Tides are a major factor, up to 20 feet, so again check with locals, biggest tide problem for sail boats are the estchuaires(spelling ?). Cholla Bay can have great sailing, be aware of tides. Launching should only be done in the Port or Cholla Bay. You can use a ramp on the open gulf ; if a storm comes up, you could have major problems getting back on the trailer. The entrance to the Port is narrow, only a problem in major storms. Cholla Bay has special launch vehicles, with radios. They can launch and retrieve , under any tide condition. If you decide to launch in Cholla Bay, look for a launch vehicle or ask at JJ's. "Villa" helped me launch for many years. The water will be ok by March, swimmable in April, and warm from June to October. Days will be cool/mild in Jan/Feb;warming up and great thru June. Respect the people and their laws, they are great. Try to avoid holidays, spring break breaks, Easter-VERY CROWDED.
