PSS gushing water

A couple weeks ago I took the boat out for awhile and when returning to the slip, I backed it in.. let it idle and then shut it off... after getting off the boat I noticed the bilge pump was dumping water, about a half gallon every couple minutes.. after pulling up the floor boards, I traced the water leak back to the shaft seal.. it was gushing water.. a stream about the size of my little finger.. I was able to move the collar back and forth and the water would not stop... Leaning over the top of the motor I was able to spin the shaft with my hand... it seamed that the seal centered itself and the gushing stopped.... I've taken the boat out a couple times sence then and after backing in, I'll put it back in forward and let it run for a couple minutes, spinning the shaft forward , before I shut the motor down... Is it common for the shaft seal to mis align when putting the boat in reverse? or is it time to replace the unit... Its been in for a few years.... Randy..... windward@softcom.net

Not Common

I just replaced my shaft bellows after 1400 hours and ten years. It sounds as if the collar has slid up the shaft. What you want to do is to take out the top allen head screws. Loosen the set screws under it. Slide the collar back between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Tighten the set screws. Put some lock tight on the top locking screws before tightening them down. As a back up, put a hose clamp in front of the collar. There should be no reason at all for the leak you described unless the collar has lost compression, or something has wrapped around the shaft bellows or fallen on it. You should call PSS technical for discussion, but I think you'll find I'm right. There should be nothing to replace except the bellows after a long time. Rick D.

Proper Procedures for PSS

PYI web site: http://www.pyiinc.com/ That's interesting, I see that the PSS shaft seal is now standard equipment on the Coast Guards 47ft life boats - see their link. Installation instructions: http://www.pyiinc.com/index.php?section=pss_shaft_seal&action=instructions&sn=2 1. In order to compensate for reduced pressure from the pleated bellows over time just move the coller aft a tad. Item #1 under Troubleshooting says if you experience any spray to move the coller aft 1/8-inch. If misting still occurs repeat until the spray stops. 2. If the set screws are ever loosened they should be replaced with new ones. PYI has new ones which are heat treated and have a really sharp tooth. Re-used set screws may have lost some of their tooth which is why they shouldn't be re-used. I keep replacement O-rings, set screws, and allen wrench together in a plastic bag on board.

Danger!!!

Hello Randy, You should not be able to move the rotor/stainless collar up and down the shaft by hand. If you did so either the rotor is not properly set to the shaft by its set screws or the shaft is moving in and out of the propeller shaft coupling. Either one of these items wrong could cause water intrusion that could create a very uncomfortable situation for you. Like driving with your cars lug nuts only finger tight. Please feel free to call me so we can discuss it. 800-523-7558 Kevin L. Woody, PYI.

I remember the day ... when I went into ...

reverse and pulled the shaft out of the transmission ... fortunately the shaft/prop didn't pull itself out of the boat! Vic "Seven"
