What PSS do I need for a 2001 Catalina 380? I am planning to change out my leaking @!^&*( old style stuffing box. I don't know why Catalina put that in this boat when the had everyother upgrade you could think off.

As a short term very cheap fix

Have you thought about using some of that Gore PTFE (Teflon?)Flax packing ? I use it and it is virtually dripless. On my old boat I was fairly satisfied with the PSS shaft seal I put on and I was going to on my new boat, but for various reasons held off and tried some of this Gore Flax packing as a temporary measure. Well 3 years later and basically no-leaks and at this point. I am not motivated at all to go through the hassle, expense and potential worries of putting on a PSS. http://www.e-marine-inc.com/products/gfopacking/packing.html

I did exactly the same thing.

I removed my "dripless" and replaced with the old stuffing box, installed the new GORE type flax and have been dripless for alot less money. My "dripless" started leaking and it took me six months to get scheduled to pull boat so that I could replace. Now if I have a problem I can fix it in the water, even replace all the flax. I would use the money to install "Driveshaft Saver" which will solve alot more problems than a dripless box. My humble opinion, of course.

Need to know stern tube OD

Hello Mike, Its easy to tell you the shaft is 1 ¼”. However the stern tube OD should be confirmed on the vessel. Stern tube material OD’s can change. Not saying that Catalina did so for the 380 but to be safe you should measure it up. Take care. Kevin

Thank you

I appreciate your and everyone elses feedback on my orginal question about the PSS. The Gore packing may be my first method of attack. I will considered realigning the engine at the same time. I will have it haul for a bottom job in April and I hope to once and for all minimize that aggravation.
