I forgot to add that from 3m above the water you can see anything that you
need to not run over (slow grin) and the radar can also. If your getting a
JRC thats high enough as if you mount it higher for better range it doesn't
help much, the jrc doesnt have the range to take advantage of the additional
height and the cable is not detachable from the radome making it a hassle
when you demast.
Secondly I wouldn't go a bit lower than 3m, the output from a 1000 is 1500
watts I think and the 1500 model is 2000 watts. They limited cellphone power
for a reason and if you think about it many thousand times that energy in
microwaves will be getting beamed through your body once a second as it
revolved.
I had the MK II mounted astern 1m above the lifelines and whenever the
radar was on the LED's on my depthfinder, and in my stereo would flicker
(even when off) with every pass. I talked to a local marine electronics tech
who enlightened me on what microvaves do to your head, and nads. So up it
went to the taller mount and I now own a microwave detector, (one you check
leakage in your oven with) that shows safe levels in the cockpit now
(compared to off the scale before)
