Just wanted to say Hi to all.

I am proud new owner of 62 Challenger "BlackStar". Located in Portland Ct.

I will be doing a restore on her and look forward to sharing with the group.

This Challenger was made in UK by Hallimatic, sound condition with many parts included and many needed. I am excited to undertake this challenge.

Welcome- I'm originally form S. Glastonbury. Right up the street. If this is the one at Classic Boat, (Builders of the Devon Yawl), I tried to get a look at her last fall, but the yard was to busy. I understood that she needed a new cabin. Congradulations, you've come to the right place for all the info you'll need.

Alden Challenger

Yes, this is the one from Classic, it was taken by Yankee for fees owed. Interesting story. Yankee has the boat and Classis has the parts to restore her.

Andrew from Classic has all parts to complete her, new interior, sails, windows, rigging, etc.

The major work I can see will be rebuilding the cockipt (glass work) and the main windows were removed and plywood was inserted in their place. I think (hope) andrew at classic has them

I have to work out the deal with him for those items.

I purchased the boat as is with masts from Yankee. I think it was a steal at the price I paid (11k) (even without the missing parts)

I guess we will see.

BTW is there a place to share pictures? I am a real nutcase and have a few hundred of this boat, I can share some of the more interesting ones

Right now we don't have an image upload capability. Howerver, if you email me pictures I'll be happy to put them on my site (reno2.com) and give you a link to refer to them that you can then put in your post.

Cockpits seem to be an area that everyone is working on. Tom has some good observations on why these go bad. I'm looking forward to your pictures.

Welcome aboard. You found a great site here. I am trying to compile a list of owners and boats. Do you know your boat number It is a leter after the design number. Mine is 949H. The first challenger was 949A which my father owned. I haven't been able to find her yet. There is a picture of her on my web site
Welcome again

Welcome Richard(Check out Bills new website, wow!)

Richard, great to hear you have photos of your project. I look forward to seeing them. I just checked out Bills new website, I learn a ton everytime I see photos of Challengers in various stages of repair. Fascinating for me.

Bill, I remember talking to a previous owner of Christiana. I also read a novel, I think it is called Dark Sky. There is a mention of the boat in the beginning as the author had sailed on her in Maine years ago.

Wonderful website Bill. I look forward to the progress that shows on the site. Your connection back to the beginnings of these boats and Alden through your dad is very interesting for all of us.

Hull number

Hi, Mine is 949 JJ. Not sure what that means.

Bit of background. She has been on the hard last 10 years and was put through a partial restoration.

This is what the seller told and showed me yerserday. It came from a husband and wife in the Maryland (chesapeke area). He has the ships logs and orig prints and sail plans for her. According th the seller, She circumnavigated 2 times and on her last voyage landed in CT, there soon after the couple divorced and the boat was abandoned.

The boat and all the restoration parts ended up with 2 parties whom will not speak to each other. Sooo I purchased the boat from the yard and just made the deal for the rest of the parts from the 2nd party.

The person who purchased her had to do a complete restore of interior, awlgrip hull and started work on cockpit. The mast was converted to alumium keeping the mizzen and boom wood. He has 9-10 sets of sails that come with the deal, canvas cover, new windows, brand new (re-chromed) binacle compass, new winches, rigging, etc.

I believe I have all I need to fully restore her...less the sweat labor.

I will share more as I move forward. I am working on setting a web share up with my ISP for the pictures I have. If anyone wants something specific, let me know and I will mail them

Where is she now?

I am looking for the whereabouts of an Alden Challenger named Christiana, which my family chartered every year for four weeks over the course of nearly 30 years. I have heard of her mentioned around the net, but would love to hear that someone has found her and is restoring her. My email is focusedgoal@hotmail.com. I would be more than happy to recount anything you want to know about her through the eyes of one very dedicated crew member.

Sincerely,
Travis I. Granger
