Protecting folding props from growth

I have a Gori 2 blade folding prop on my Catalina 30. Last year was our first experience with the boat and I could not decide how to protect the prop from marine growth without possibly distrubing the folding action. So I did nothing. Wrong move. After spending quite some time locating bare metal again at home on the workbench I find myself with the same question. I found and purchased a can of anhydrous lanolin which the vendor said was better than nothing. What do you folks do with your folders? Paint, nothing, grease????? Thanks, Bill

I know of nothing.

Hello Bill, I’m not aware of any material, which can be placed on the propeller to inhibit marine growth that either lasts or does not affect the propeller in a adverse way. I have used desitin before on my prop it it worked while the boat was stationary. As soon as I placed the propeller into us the material was thrown off. Sorry for no help. Kevin

Lanolin

There was a discussion on ybw.com forums recently about this, and lanolin was suggested as working well in colder waters. May give it a try myself......

Tempo Outdrive Antifoulant

I have used Tempo Clear Outdrive Antifoulant in spray cans for years on different props and shafts on different boats with good results. For folding or feathering props it takes a bit of masking tape on the prop and zinc. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656

prop anti-foulant

the boat yard had used a clear anti-foulant on my 3 blade max prop and it worked well. perhaps its the tempo product mentioned earlier.

Anti fouling

If there was a product that worked, someone would be very rich. Dirty hulls, much like dirty props, don't perform well. The dirtier they get, the less they behave. Lanolin does work well in colder waters, but even then only a short time. There are all sorts of other tricks like magic markers, cayenne pepper in anti fouling paint.....etc If you are to paint the prop, use the tempo clear, and make sure the coat is thin and uniform. Why is it that we boat owners admit we are so lazy? Get over the side and clean it!!! It is part of the joys of owning a boat. Try a long handled brush if you are in cold water, it can do an admirable job if you keep up on it.

Zink Oxide!

Regular old zink oxide (Diaper rash treatment about $1.50 a tube) works pretty good I don't think anything will stop the growth over time. Zink oxide has controlled the growth on my prop for six months!
