In the Universal 25 manual that came with my 1985 Cat 30 when I purchased it several years ago, it recommends either SAE 30 or SAE 40 weight oil. I believe the SAE 40 would protect better at high temps but be more difficult to start on cold mornings. Is there a consensus or advice on whether 30 or 40 weight oil is preferred for the Universal 25 in the San Francisco area?

M25 Oil

Dav With a question like that, fair as it is, there will probably be no consensus, per se. I've been using synthetic Mobil 30W for the past three years. If you have cold-time starting problems you may want to consider the solenoid option for starting, described in the related link. I did it and it works wonders. Never a problem starting. Hope you've updated your wiring harness, too. We're in Alameda. Stu

Try Shell Rotella 15W-40

Dave, I switched to to Rotella 15W40 over 4 years ago and chaninging from the reccomended 30W to 15W40 made cool weather starting much easier. My Univeral still does not use any oil between changes. Oil pressure comes up more quickly on the gauge on cold starts, too. give it a try. Steve W.
