I am wondering what the best all around propeller for the 50hp Mercury Bigfoot and my 26X? Anyone done the calculations and have a reco?

Good Question!

Just replaced the prop on my 26X and it made a tremendous difference. I went from the stock 13 pitch to an 8 pitch, 12" prop. This was on a Honda 50 and your diameter needs might be different. Before, the engine would barely get 3k rpm. Now it will redline if I want it to, and planes the 26X easily. Totally different experience. The weight of the X seems to need this pitch to get the power needed. Otherwise, you just sit there with the engine pushing as hard as it can and the bow way up in the air.

look at this

Look at the Solas 3 blade, 14x11 at: http://www.iboats.com/mall/propfinder/?session_id=290295228&cart_id=958748299 This shouold be about right and if you don't reach max rpm at WOT, you can depitch it to get more rpm, or go up in pitch to bring down the rpm.

To Night Sailor:

How does the 11 pitch prop work on your 26X? Max Speed? Level plane with ballast removed? Just curious. The weight of this boat is the problem. The prop must be matched with the motor and boat. Since these motors are minimal for the boat, the pitch is critical.

RPM

is critical to efficient operation and life of motor. Whatever prop is used it should allow the motor to operate in its designated operating range at WOT. Most operate at 5500 to 6000. Bad if you are underpropped and motor races. bad if you are overpropped and motor lugs. I have 50merc, not big foot, on my x. I use 11 5/8 x 10 most of the time. I can cruise at 19 mph (gps calculated) empty ballast and 14 -15 with ballast while motor purrs within operating range. For extended cruising (which I don't do much) I switch to a 10.75 x 12 and operate at 2500 to 3000 rpm. If able to, operate the motor with as many different props as possible while keeping eye on tach and speed. Big foot should handle a slightly higher pitch??
