I have a 1986 model Oday 28 which was manufactured in 1985 which I purchased in 2006. The engine is a Universal M12 10 hp diesel. The propeller is two bladed and is 12 inches from tip to tip and 9 inches on pitch. When I run the engine in gear, the highest rpm I can achieve is around 2000, however at 1750 rpm the exhaust begins billowing black smoke (unused fuel). I was told to have the prop repitched to about 7 inches of pitch. I did that during my last haul out and the improvement I now have is that the smoke doesn't begin until 2100 rpm. The engine is rated at around 3500 rpm. When I am not in gear I can get the engine up to around 3300 rpm with no smoking.

I recently read an article in one of these Oday forums which suggested the prop used on another Oday 28 was smaller, about 8 inches from tip to tip.

Can anyone advise me as to the proper size prop that I need and/or what the standard prop was that the Oday company originally furnished with my size engine on the O28?

I'm a bit surprised that there seem to be no Oday 28 owners out there who know the size of the propeller that came with the boat when it was new. Some kind of secret information?

I have my manual onboard that should list the prop size. I will check this weekend and get back to you. I have a question for you though. Do you know where I can purchase the controls for the Nicro Fico traveller mounted on the cabin top? I have the traveller on my 1986 but no controls. Very difficult to use.

Thanks

I've just had my boat for a couple of years, most of the time rebuilding it. My Nicro Fico cars on the traveller came with the boat. I'm not aware of any source of this brand, although it was a popular one. I should think any of the cars presently available such as Harken or Schaeffer would work as it appears the traveller track is a fairly uniform size. I'll check the size of the traveller track tomorrow and compare it with the Harken traveller cars advertised in West's catalog and will let you know what I find.

Will appreciate any info you can find on the size of the propeller.

My 79 O'Day 28 documentation lists a 12x11 propeller (RH) for the Universal (5411) 11hp engine or a 12x8 (RH) for the OMC saildrive. My boat however came with a Yanmar YSM-8 and has a folding prop and I haven't checked the dimensions yet. The 12x11 seems appropriate for your needs. I also get black smoke but in the water when under heavy load. The engine is 30 years old and seems to have good power but doesn't pull maximum revs under load. I'm not too worried since I only use it to get in and out of the dock. Let us know if you come to a satisfactory solution to your quandary.

Thanks for your response. The prop that I have was 12X9 and it caused smoke (unburned fuel I was told) at 1750 rpm. I had it repitched to 12x7 and this improved the performance to the extent I could cruise at 2100 rpm with speed at between 5 1/2 and 6 kts. Then I read a letter in one of these forums in which the prop was smaller, around 8 inches and that puzzled me so I put in this inquiry. Lots of interesting thoughts.
