My 27' is coming out soon for the spring tune up, and I was thinking about replacing the propeller. I read on the Performance Propellers site that the 'perfect pitch' propeller improves backing. Has anyone replaced their propeller to improve backing, or used this company?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Highly recommend a three blade prop. Not only will there be more power available but backing will also improve. Can't say much about performance propellers other than I would not pay for them.

If you have a Renault 8 or a Yanmar 1GM a 3 blade prop even if the diameter and pitch are adjusted May result in being over propped and overload you motor. Prop walk can work to your advantage. Learn to use it and save your cash.

Agree with Nelsonhow, if you go with a three blade prop it will likely be smaller than the two blade you may have now.

3-blade on my H27

I have the Renault 8 on my H27 and the previous owner replaced the original 2-blade with some type of 3-blade and I've always been curious about whether or not this is a good thing. What exactly of "over-propped" and how do I know? Performance has always been modest at best, but it's an old 8HP motor, so I don't have high expectations. The thing I do know is that it won't take me directly into any wind >20kts.

txmilke this is going to involve getting some kind of accurate rpm reading and finding the tech data for what wot rpm under load for the renault is then going and seeing where you stack up. i would suspect from owning my h27 with a honda 15 outboard that an 8hp with 3 blades would be very over propped.

You won't know if a 3-bladed prop is under- or over-propped until you can accurately determine the WOT RPM and comparing it to the RPM that the RC8D is supposed to achieve. If your WOT RPM is not within the spec value, perhaps a reputable propeller shop could re-pitch or adjust the blades of the existing propeller to bring your WOT RPM in line with what Renault specs.
