Propeller Line Cutters

Spurs, Shaft Shark, Other ... None of the above.

Cruising Long Island Sound, New England, and Maine ... already experienced the enjoyment of being caught in a fish trap off Newport RI ... always travel with a mask, snorkel, fins, and sharp knife as a result ...

Thoughts on propeller line cutters would be greatly appreciated.

There have been numerous studies on these things and the scissors type (Spurs) are generally accepted as the best. We have Spurs and we are quite happy with them.

I like mine

I have the Prop-protector and have been happy with it. It has saved me from diving under the boat a couple of times.

I've used both scissors and disk cutters and they all seem to work fine on the easy to cut lobster trap lines used in New England.

- The disk cutters are very sharp. Buy a pair of kevlar kitchen gloves off Amazon to wear if you need to dive on the props.

- Get this hook knife. It goes on a pole and lets you reach under the boat from the deck

- If you have a spade rudder, make sure a line can't jam between the rudder and the hull. Many people put a small metal rod just forward of the rudder to deflect lines away from this crack.

- I try hard to not foul traps but in most areas in Maine (not all) the traps are set in lines with a buoy at each end. Cutting one buoy won't cause the lobsterman to lose the string. It's worse to drag a string of traps while trying to get free as you will drag across other strings creating an amazing tangle on the bottom.

The fish trap areas are well documented on our charts. Lobster traps are not!

Make sure you have your camera ready when your diver changes your zincs.
You might get some cool photo ops of him bleeding like a stuck pig in the water and then getting ripped apart by a shark!! Cool huh?

Whatever you do, dont let your spouse spoil the fun by warning him ahead of time that you have a line cutter.

I've considered epoxying tabs to the rudder and keel with a line between them......as shown above. Any thoughts on if that might help?

Sumner, That's good as long as the line does not break and tangle in the prop

I don't see how that will keep anything out of your prop. If something like that was a valuable tool, I would think others would be doing it. There are cages that commercial fish boats use, if you are really worried about it and don't want to install a line cutter.
Sorry.

I was under the impression that full keeled boats snagged pot lines less often and was trying to work in that direction if possible. I did just find this link that implies that others have done it and that it might be advantageous to some degree. I guess I don't see where I'd have a lot to loose and there sure are a lot of crab pots off Florida and I did snag a couple the last trip with the Mac but they were easy to get off.....

Hi Sum,
This is Dan Philgreen, the guy from Fort Myers who came to visit you when your boats were in the yards down here. I just wanted to let you know that I just purchased a '90 26S. I actually found one I liked at a price that was good for me right down here in Cape Coral. The boat is in good shape but the trailer it was on - overkill built with two mobile home axles - was completely gone and literally falling apart. One axle was broken due to corrosion and one wheel had actually fallen off. The previous owner purchased another used trailer and included it in the deal. I took the trailer home and have been refurbing it. I hope to have it back together by this coming weekend and then will go fetch the boat, which is now blocked up in the previous owners back yard. I'll send you some pix if you like but last time I tried to email you I couldn't get through your server. Anyway, I really enjoyed meeting you and hope to stay in touch.

Dan
