I will be repowering with a beta and putting a new shaft and prop. How
long is the new shaft supposed to be and should I go with a 2 or 3
blade prop?

Hi

I supply a 1.1 or 1.2 mtere shaft which is too long. This is cut to
length depending on whether you have rope-cutter, shaft anode etc
fitted.

Hi Steve,

Do you use a 2 blade or three blade prop on your boat? What are the
advantages and disadvantages of each?

Hi Robert

I use a 3 blade prop so I have better control in reverse and more
instant power. Doesnt seem to make a lot of difference under sail,
especially as teh wind gets stronger.

I repowered several years ago with the Beta from Steve...went with the shaft and 3 bladed prop that Steve supplied. Nothing to do but install same, shaft was exactly the right length and diameter. 3 bladed prop gives me considerably more control when backing,...a big difference in control.

I had the same experience as Hans. Couldn't believe how simple it was to repower.
After 4 seasons with new Beta 13.5hp all I can say is 'Super'

Has anyone heard of or used a Kiwiprop?
It is featured in Practical Sailor in the latest issue.
Kiwiprops.com I think.

Plastic blades. Less weight outwards yields less vibration and noise and wear on bearings.

Blades mounted on some type of metal turning axles, so it is feathering somehow. I don't fully understand it's operation.

hmmm.. I hit the wrong button...
I'd stay away from plastic folding props- unless you're
planning to participate in races.
The shaft for a Vega is quite short, about one meter, and
quite thick (25mm)for its length , and properly adjusted,
there shouldn't be any vibration.

I have a 3 bladed Maxprop that works great astern and ahead, and feathers when sailing. Been trouble free for 7 years. I love it. Came with the boatNicholas Walsh

Hi Nico;
I guess you don't have problems with those pesky barnacles.
I'm sailing in tropical waters where the water is around 80
F (27 C) and I have to clean the prop every 3 months, more
often in Summer.Folding props don't work too good here.

Hi everyone,

It looks like most of you have gone to a 3 blade prop with good
results and no complaints under sail and a shaft of 3 1/2 to 4 ft.
depending on zincs and rope cutter appears about norm.
Thank you all for your help.

In the thread on Propellers, rope cutters were sometimes mentioned. I have
never used one on any of the boats I've owned, but could have used one a
couple times. Since I am now refitting the entire power train on Flyaway
(Vega 2023), I might add one.

What type of rope cutters are folks using and how well do they work. Any
comments on installation would also be appreciated. Probably a more
important question is: what rope cutters to stay away from.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris

Dont buy teh cheap disk cutters, they are useless.

The one I like is called The Stripper made by Ambassador Marine in the
UK. They are not cheap (about £250) but they certainly work beautifully.
If you need one then let me know as I have contact with teh owner of
Ambassador marine.

Cheers
