We have a 1999 340. The propane tank (think it's 4 lb.) rusted and the valve is outdated & cannot be refilled. Thought we'd get an aluminum tank with the new valve, but cannot find one that is small enough to fit in the storage locker on the aft platform. Called Hunter & they weren't able to suggest where we could get an aluminum replacement (they do us aluminum for the larger sized tanks). Does anyone either know where we can get an aluminum tank, or know how we can paint/treat the steel version to avoid rusting? Thanks, Stuart

Stuart: Contact Seward Marine in Ca. They where probably the OEM for your tank.

Try POR

There's a good chance you will not find aluminum tanks in the size you need. We own a propane company and could not find aluminum tanks for our Moody. Get new stainless tanks, some POR and paint. We just treated our new tanks this way. Don't know how long they'll last, but it has to be longer than factory paint.

Stuart can you find the 4lb tank?

Stuart, I've tried a couple of company's and it's hard to find a replacement steel one let alone an alumin one. If you do come across an alumin tank please post, I know 3 people that would buy 2 each!

Hunter has steel replacement

propane tank (4lb). Cannot find a similar size aluminum tank, so I'm going to get the steel one ... and take Kathy's advice and paint it with POR.

Aluminum propane tanks

Seaward Products sells an aluminum propane tank (93131) 11 lb. total wt - 2.5 lb. propane vertical tank under gas accessories that fits in the propane tank locker of my 310 which is tha same as the 340. They are about twice as expensive ($140) as steel tanks ($80) but they do not rust and they do have the overfill valve now required on all propane tanks. Performance yacht (www.pyacht.com and www.boatus.com both carry the seaward products line of propane tanks)

Jerry ,#93131 Seaward TOO BIG

Jerry, On a 340 the highest the tank can be is only 11 1/2 inches with a base 0f 6 1/2 inches. Your tank is 17 inches tall. I thought about using the horiz alumin tank but the 17" the long way doesn't work either.

Manchester Tank 5 lb. vertical aluminum tank.

You are correct that the tank that I gave the part number for is the 10 lb tank. Manchester Tank (www.mantank.com) who actually makes the tanks for Seaward Products does make a 5 lb vertical aluminum tank that will fit in the LPG locker. The steel version of the tank (#10054) appears on the Manchester Tank web site under D.O.T. propane tanks. Contact the Manchester sales representative for your state on where you can locally order the tank(s).
