Propane Tank Problem

I am experiencing a frustration with the flow from my propane tank on my Hunter 340. The tank is full, but the gas does not seem to always flow through the hoses and pressurize the system. If I disconect the hose connection and then reconnect that might work, but not always and I may need to disconnect a few times. When I disconnect sometimes I get a gas smell and sometimes not - and the pressure gauge does not read. Any ideas on what to look at? I have no experience troubleshooting a propane system, but the problem definitely seems to be either the tank itself or in the initial lines that connect to the tank. Thanks for any advice... Rob

Propane problem

Is your tank over full? New tanks have a overfill protection and this may be closing off the tank. To trouble shoot it start at the tank and make sure propane comes out at this point and move your way down the line. If you are trying to light the appliance and it doesn't light right away this may just be air in the line and sometimes it takes time for the air to get out and for the gas to get to the appliance. If you unhook any connections make sure you spray that joint with soapy water to check for leaks after you put it back together. Rob Morton

Possible Regulator?

If the unit has some age it could be the regulator starting to go bad, I've had to replace them before. They typically will cause a squirrelly flow when on the way out.

Same Problem

I, too, am having a significant problem with the propane system on a 2001 boat. The previous owner 'never used the cooktop,' so it was unused for at least two seasons. I have gotten it to light twice in the two weeks I've owned the boat, but it burns out within about 2 minutes and won't restart. I've checked the tank, which is full and adjusted the overflow valve to the full pressure. Pressure gauge reads about 110psi though it was 120psi when I opened it a time or two ago. The solenoid 'clicks' when the switch is thrown. Perhaps a safety system is overperforming? Looking at the Force 10 Stove instructions, it looks like there is also a solenoid in the cooktop. Maybe a problem there? It has also been suggested that the regulator may have residue buildup (a yellow powder)from such little use. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have had problems with the new style

OPD valve on tanks. There is a second valve that the male fitting has to press in against to enable the flow of gas. If you turn on the valve on top of the tank with nothing connected and no gas comes out, you have the new style valve(assuming the tank is not empty). When the left hand threaded POL end is tightened, it opens the safety valve. I ended up replacing the left hand thread POL male end of the coupler with a new one and it worked.
