Would like to modify my propane tank on my Catalina 310 so I can run a hose to my stern rail grill without disconnecting the tank from the galley stove. Any advice would be appreciated.

The space is very tight but you can put a T in after the tank connection and put in another line. If you have a Magma grill they sell a kit for doing this. But then you will have to cut holes in the propane locker hatch (you don't want to cut into the locker itself for safety reasons).

I just got another 10-pound tank for the other side and a hose that runs straight to the grill. I just lift up the cover, connect the hose and turn on the tank. Takes me less than 30 seconds to light the grill.

Just out of curiosity...where can one buy one of those small propane tanks?

Thanks,
Jim

I bought a 10# aluminum Worrhington tank that fits in the propane locker on my C355 from Amazon; was around $90 last year, IIRC.

Pretty sure they sell them right on this web site too.

Although I use the small ones you can get at any big box store. Couple of bucks each and use maybe 2 or 3 of them a summer.

Check your local AirGas Supplier. They have them for about 1/2 cost of any boating store.

Most RV suppliers carry the 10 lb. aluminum tanks. That's where I bought mine.

If you don't mind steel (Powder Coated) you can buy them at HomeDepot

Also check out a place called "The Propane Tank Store" online... http://www.propanetankstore.com/

With our 310 one thing we did learn is that our port side propane locker is different than the starboard side. The starboard side is the one with the connection for the stove and only an aluminum tank will fit (some of the older fiberglass fit but they are now considered unsafe). On the port side I got a 10 pound tank from a local grill place and it fits fine.

Just something to consider if you are going to get another tank. Unless you pay the bucks it won't work on the stove/oven side.

If you have the standard 20# grill tanks you can swap them out at a lot of gas stations or lumber stores, etc. Very convenient for cruising as the regular fill stations like U-Haul are not near the water. You get a fairly new inspected tank every time so corrosion is not a problem.
Costs a little more though.
I used to have the 12# tanks but had a couple of places refuse to fill them, said it wasn't worth their time. I obviously won't be going to those places for anything else either.

Do not ever modify your propane tank!

I have my grill connected to a valve which is tee'd off the down stream side of the solenoid valve. That way the solenoid must be open to use either the stove or grill, and the sniffer will shut down the flow of either line develops a leak inside the boat. (I did have the hose going to the grill fail after about ten years use, the UV caused some cracks in the rubber. I could smell propane whenever the solenoid was open, but the alarm never went off because the leak was out on the transom. I thought the grills regulator was leaking, but when I started to remove it I found the cracks.) The down side of this method is that the solenoid, tee, and valve for the grill all have to fit in the propane locker and you need an additional gas tight pass through for the grill hose. No connections are permitted outside the locker except the connection to the device itself. I built a locker for two 20# tanks and hung it on my stern rail, and it's designed to contain all the connections. Looks like Hell but it works.

Here is how I did my Magma. Removed the pressure gage and installed an elbow and valve. A fitting to attach the hose up to the BBQ. There is just enough room to stow the hose and regulator in the locker. Keep a spare full propane bottle on the port side, they are both the Home Depot steel ones that fit.

Not sure if the valve is necessary, I like having it. Just used it for the first time last night and all was good.
