I have recently purchased a 1980 Hunter 27' with a propane stove only...no connections or locker yet. I'm told that the locker must be outside of the boat..but where? Another suggestion was to mount the gas bottle on the stern rail, and run the gas line through PVC pipe to the cabin. If you have experience with this...please respond. Thanks!

The Propane Locker

should be located in the cockpit locker with vent lines attached. Buy a sealed propane locker and mount it in a cockpit locker. The gas solenoid is mounted inside the propane locker. You will need to wire it up to the control switch which will be inside the cabin. You will also need to run a power wire to your d.c. power panel and use a new breaker position for it. Next you must run the gas line all the way to your stove. It is best to have no splices in the line as that is where it could leak. It is designed so that any leaks that occur in the propane locker will be vented overboard. And all gas line joints are in the locker. Hope this makes sense.

I have had propane on my 86 H34 since new

If I followed the ABYC rules,,,well, I can't. They are too 'preventative' (explosion risk) in their completeness. I just do the best I can. Maybe your PO was using disposable bottles thusly no equipment.

Have you considered alcohol?

You might compare cost of building the propane system (especially if you have the work done by a professional)and changing stoves to a non-pressure alcohol. The latter will probably be less of a headache in the long run. The drawback is the lower heat level and probably fuel cost. In this regard, much will depend on what expectations you have for a cooking stove. Our origo two burner does everything that we need and recently we added an electric water kettle and a toaster oven (both 110) for use at the dock and that has increased the options for meals. Propane Locker or Not?

I have the same boat. A previous owner just put the tank in the lazaret above the rudder--dangerous and illegal. West Marine has a self-contained locker for a 1 gallon tank that can be installed above the Diesel tank. It has to have an upper and lower vent and isn't really handy or easy to install. I had to make it possible to lower the platform it sits on to be able to remove and replace the tank. If if had it to do again, I'd get an aluminum tank - tall thin 2 gallon? and attach it to the stern rail. Love the propane, instant high heat. Pain to do correctly in a H27. If you are handy, you could make a locker to fit in the lazaret. Just get the solenoid and other parts to go in the locker.
