propane levels

Yes it will work but I prefer weighing the tank. Before filling you weigh the empty tank; a 20 lb capacity propane tank is around 18 lbs give or take 8 oz. There should be a stamp in the bottom with the actual weigh of that particular tank (ex. TW18.2). One gallon of propane weighs 4.2 lbs and a 20lb tank usually holds 4.7 gallons or 19.74 lbs. So a full tank should weigh 18+19.74= 37.74 lbs. If at any time you want to know how much propane you have left just weigh the tank and substract the weight of the empty tank. It is easy to estimate 1/4(23lbs), 1/2(28lbs) ,3/4(33lbs) and full (38lbs). Smaller and lighter tanks will weigh less and will hold a lesser volume but the principles are the same. I have not found any accurate gauges as the tank will hold a constant pressure up until the point it is empty.

Benny, serious question: how do you weight it on the boat? Do you have a scale? I usually leave our bathroom scale at home when I go cruising.:)

its not really so important to know how much propane you have left in the tank, as it is to know whether the spare is full or empty...
I have never worried or cared how much is left, although I have sometimes wondered where it went so quickly... I just connect the spare, check for leaks, and try to remember to refill the spare..:D.

dang!... all these calculations for different tank sizes and composition (steel vs aluminum vs fiberglass) when you could have just poured hot water over it?;)

and the gauges can be highly accurate, but due to the properties of the propane, it wont allow itself to be measured by a pressure gauge, without an unecessary amount of much more complicated calculations and equasions....

A $10 luggage scale. Since it goes up to 100 pounds we can also for the trout we catch.:D

Here's a rough scale. Block at the end of the boom, line tied to tank, through the block and tied to a twenty pound anchor held one foot off the deck. Anchor touches the deck, time for a refill. Works if the empty tank is slightly less than twenty pounds.

Well, you got me, I was just illustrating a more accurate method. In the boat I now use the pick up and shake method and let my time developed sense of the slosh I feel inside the tank indicate a good enough approximation of the fuel available. Like centerline says there is no need to worry too much as long as you know the spare tank is full. I still use the weight method on the tanks for the RV before going on a trip.

If you fish you probably have a small scale for weighing them.

If I have to remove the tank from its fitting and locker to do a test, I'd just as soon get the thing filled if I'm ashore. That is, if you think you're soon to run out-fill it; if you do run out, then you don't need the test.

Two different options for the same: google digital propane scale. TVL is a LCD display and the scale stays under the tank, or for those app savvy, there is a quirky brand that displays to your phone.
