What size propane tanks fit the 2008 hunter 31? Are the Aluminum tanks worth the outlay?

IRC, neither will fit as they are too tall, that is if your propane locker is the same as the newer 33's. I bought a 5 lbs. steel tank. Still fine after 4 years as is the origianl steel tank that came with the boat.

I'm not in salt water however....

They make 10# cylinders that are 17.25" tall & 9.6" dia. I think if you shop around you may find ones that will work.

The locker on the H33 will only fit up to 12" tall x 9" dia. I believe the 31 is the same.

Propane Bottle selection

The question of aluminum, steel, or fiberglass bottles has been discussed in the past. To help you with your choice, note the following:

All metal cylinders must be inspected and re-certified after 12 years. The re-certification is good for an additional 5 years. This applies equally to aluminum and steel bottles. See the link below:

http://www.propane101.com/propanecylinders.htm#cylinderrecertification

The fiberglass bottles are initially certified for 5 years. Then they must be inspected and re-certified for each additional 5 years up to a maximum life of 15 years. See the link below:

http://litecylinder.com/faq/

Most propane refill stations are not licensed to inspect and re-certify. This service may be difficult and/or expensive. I have personally never had this done.

Given the cost of aluminum, steel, and fiberglass, the lowest cost per year is probably the steel cylinder. The fiberglass has the see-thru capability so you can see how much is remaining, so that is probably an advantage.

Your money, your choice. FWIW, I am about to replace my aluminum tank this year with a steel tank, and I sail in salt water.

Rich, it's not so much the question of which to use, it's more that the F-G and Aluminum do not fit the propane locker. I've yet to see a manuf. that produces a tank 12" total height x 9" dia. other than the 5lbs. steel.

Scott,

I agree. The search I performed showed that a 5# steel is the only tank that will fit in 12" x'9".

I'm going to try the liquid rubber like you treat tool handles with. I'll let you know how it turns out.
