I am just entering the world of inboard sailing. The propwalk to port on my Hunter 30 is unmanageable. At least I can not get it to listen. Is there any suggestions as to what I can do to correct or work with this problem? My current slip really favours a starboard exit however all is I can do is back to port and hope I do not hit the rocks on the way out. Any suggestions would be helpful. Murray

Short bursts of thrust in reverse

When backing, put the trans in reverse and give the throttle a short burst of power. Once the boat inches backwards, put the trans into neutral and coast. When you need to gain more momentum, do this sequence again, put into reverse, short burst of power, then back to neutral. This keeps the boat moving in order to keep steerage, but the prop is stationary, thus not walking to port. Keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it. Roc

It is frustrating

Our 27 (3 blade prop) has the same characteristic. It will answer with speed, however, in your slip situation, as in ours, this is not an option. I center the rudder, give it a shot in reverse, shift to neutral, and then she will answer the helm. Another factor if it fits your situation is someone on the dock manhandling the boat with lines or a good push. Andy

Sailboat Handling Under Power

This video does a good job of explaining how to use prop walk to your advantage and gives you several excersises to do away from the dock to give yo confidence. -OR- You could spend big dollars for a max prop. Rules for docking- 1.)Remember above all else, not to yell at your spouse or children. 2.)Be prepared to stop and start again. 3.) Never allow anyone to leap from the boat to the dock. The chance of getting crushed if they miss is to great.
