Has anyone tried different props to see if they can get a little more speed out of an 8 hp yanmar on a 27 ft. Hunter?

BIG props

Dear Herman: When choosing a propeller you may wish to keep in mind that when you increase the propellers diameter and pitch you will continue to increase its load to the engine. This added diameter and pitch will help to increase the vessels speed to a point but this comes at a great cost to the engines life expectancy. Under severe overloading you could severely impact a engine in a season. It should be kept in mind that the engine should have the ability while under load to obtain it’s maximum rated Rpm’s. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

Prop Selection

You need to find a propeller shop to assist you. You also need to know what you want from your prop. First, get speed readings for your boat at full speed and cruise RPM's. Take this to the prop shop along with engine, prop, and boat information. They can do the calculations to tell you if you have the best prop for your needs.
