I want to replace the original prop shaft on my C36. It is a 1" diameter bronze shaft. I asked you some time ago about this, and you reccommended an alloy called 'Aquamet 22'(?). How do I go about getting a shaft for my boat. Michael McCann

I would call a local prop shop and tell them what I wanted. Be careful with the length measurement. It is not the overall measurement, but you can ask them. One can get shafting anywhere but I prefer to deal locally.

Don't rely on specs from anywhere.

Including the ones here. Every boat is different. Take David's advice and go to your local prop shop. Take your old shaft with you to avoid any problems. I am thankful the prop shop I went to insisted or I would have had a shaft 4 inches shorter than what was on the boat. And I'd say go ahead and change the cutlass bearing while you are at it. Good Luck

Replaced my shaft this winer.

Michael, I replaced my bronze shaft with a SS one. Both are 1" dia. Cost me about $350 for the new shaft. I was having the cutlass bearing replaced and they told me I needed a new shaft. The difference between bronze and SS is not that great. Good luck, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Machine Shop in Seattle Area

If you contact PYI they will probably recommend you go to Koch (sp?) Machine Shop in Seattle. I don't know their new location but at one time they were in the Freemont District near Doc Freemans closeout store. The stainless shaft is quite a bit stiffer than a bronze shaft (about 25%? or so), so this would help reduce vibration. You'll need to take along the coupling, also. Have them check the face of the coupling for being at right angles to the shaft. Just bought and installed a R&D flexible shaft coupling (click on link below) and it was probably the best $150 I ever spent on the boat. It reduced all the serious vibration signficantly. Since this adds about 1.25 inches to the shaft length (my coupling) you might consider something like this if you've got things torn apart. May want to aks for Kevin at PYI for Kochs number.
