I have to replace the shaft and coupling on my 1986 H31. The boat is in the water and I would like to have the parts on hand when it is hauled.
The Store says that Hunter used both 1" X 48" and 48.25" shafts, and asks for the length of the threads. I suspect at some point between 83 and 87 Hunter changed over, but I doubt [am hoping] it was not in the middle of the 86 model run.
Does anyone happen know which shaft length was used in 86 and the length of the threaded part of the shaft?

If you are ordering the shaft and coupling together. Ask to have them fitted and faced before they ship. All good suppliers should offer that service. Or find one that does. Much cheaper and easier to have it done up front.

Why Allan? Since it's a new shaft it shouldn't be hard to mount the coupling should it? BTW, do you recommend replacing the transmission coupling at the same time?

A split coupling may save you a lot of headaches at some time in the future, even if you don't see an immediate need for it now.

If it were me, I would just order the longer shaft. cutting off an extra 1/4" doesn't put a big dent in my day. Needing to add 1/4" might be considerably less convenient.

As Jim says it's for the next time you remove it that it pays off. Typically with a pressed on coupling when it is removed again it can need replacing. The hole gets enlarged due to material removal in the pressing off process. My understanding is the split coupling doesn't do that.

I've never replaced my transmission side even after a half dozen times in 34 years of separating the coupling. That includes changing motor mounts, installing dripless seal and rebuilding it. Depending on how yours looks it may be fine. A dial indicator could tell you how flat it turns.
