My Catalina 27 is a late 1985 (1986 S/N) with a Universal Model 18, fourteen hp diesel. I am trying to determin the right size packing...1/8", 3/16" etc. and the number of packing rings I should expect to remove and replace. Any information will be appreciated.

Packing size

Hi John: I believe your boat has a 1" shaft and for your stuffing box, use 3/16 and you should be able to get 3 rings with the cuts on the packing material 120 deg apart. It is amazing what a 1/16 difference in size will make. It will be nearly impossible to get two rings of 1/4" in your box, but 3/16 will work well. If you use the teflon packing material, and the "teflon" goop available at West Marine and other stores, you can adjust down to about 3 drops a min running and no drops when at rest. The engine heat will easily evaporate the 3 drops a min. so you will have a dry bilge. You will need to readjust after about 2-3 hours of run time. You should see a little drip before you start the engine for the first time, if no drip, loosen the nut until water runs out. Sometimes the seal is so good the trapped air won't allow water to the gland and it will get hot in a hurry with out the water. The shaft and nut may be warm for the first hour or so but not hot. after proper adjustment, it will be cool to the touch. Good luck, Dave S/V Westwine
