simple but difficult job

The job is fairly simple, but the removal of the old bearing can be very difficult. Your model may have a set screw on the side of the strut, clean off the strut thoroughly before starting. Use a wheel puller to remove the old bearing. You should be able to get info on this process from your local library Good luck.

Simple, but it can be done

This is the Cutless bearing. There is a good article about the procedure in this month's Cruising World. On my boat, it was necessary to pull the shaft in order to get the bearing out. That required dropping the rudder. So the procedurre was more complicated for me.

Not an Easy Task for My Boat

Hi SK My cutlass bearing was replaced about 3 weeks ago (76 Catalina 27). It was not easy. The engine had to be moved (Atomic 4). The mechanic that did the work is an excellant mechanic, so it wasn't lack of experience that led him to move the engine. I have not talked to Larry about all the particulars, but I think it was related to a "clearance" problem between the shaft and hull and the availability of a small enough tool to work in the space. The bill has not arrived for this work and I am in no hurry to receive it! Melody Miller
