I have not yet launched this 1991 Hunter 27-2. Engine is 1GM10 I just replaced all 4 engine mounts. Alignment looks correct. Previous owner say maybe it leaks more than normal. What make is this seal. Is there any maintenance or lubricant or adjustments??
I have not tightened the coupler bolts photo shows approximate correct alignment. I will check with feeler gauge later

Your image is that of a Nylon/Plastic shaft stuffing box and shaft log.

Here is a great site with detail about the "traditional" stuffing box.

You can go to a bronze stuffing box. The stuffign box requires a few drops of water as you run the shaft. The drops of water help to keep the flax stuffing cool. They have been around for ions. They work well and are very serviceable.

You can also find what are called "DripLess" seals. PYI.com is one company that manufactures a shaft seal. There are others.

The best practice is often to change out the nylon stuffing box for something a bit more durable. The hose to the shaft log is there to keep water from running into the boat. The clamps should be maintained tight and inspected regularly for drips or corrosion. The hose looks to be in good condition. Double Clamping is the recommended best practice.

An alignment does not just "look" approximately correct. It is a precise process to align your two shafts within a few 0.001". The precise one is the angular alignment. If this only approximately correct, you are about to do damage to your gland and cutlass bearing, not to mention vibration. See attached.

These glands "can" be maintained but are so cheap they should be removed and replaced with a bronze packing gland. See here for maintenance of a bronze gland and apply to yours :

If you are going to do something with it, you might want to consider a dripless seal. There are several on the market. I use a Volvo Penta dripless lip seal. Works very well on my older O’Day 322. I replaced a bronze stuffing box.

The Volvo opened up some space in the shaft bilge!

if you keep your old one (or if you go with another stuffing box), be sure to replace that hose. And use hose by Buck Algonquin or another source made for this application (it is much heavier walled than radiator or sanitation hose).

3819724 is the Volvo part number I found for a 1” shaft and 1 3/4 stern tube. Is that same as yours?

Yes, that is the only one for a 1” shaft. As I noted in my PM, you can shim the clamp if necessary, or add some glass to the stern tube if it is too small. But you are ordering the right part..
