Prop shaft length

We just purchased our 80 37C and while I was moving it across florida it decided to eat the prop shaft. I strongly suspect it is an alignment issues. The key way is chewed to hell on the end and the key was pulverized into dust on the inner side towards the prop. The only thing that was keeping it in the coupler were the two set screws. Anyone know the length of the prop shaft that way Ivan start determining the cost of a new prop shaft? I know it's a 1" shaft
edit: it still has the original Yanmar 3 cylinder in it.

take the old shaft out and measure it or send it to general propelar in Bradenton fl and have them make you a new one

Awesome news woodster. I was expecting a grand or more. Did you have to drop the rudder or were you able to get the shaft past it?

People in this forum have said to typically replace the coupler. Is the shaft constant diameter or tapered, depending on if the coupler is solid or split? Can a split coupler be used in place of a solid without modifying the shaft? How can I tell? Oh my - so many questions...I understand the prop end is tapered.

Update: look at this H30 manual from 80-83. Last hand-typed page has a list of shaft, prop, and pitch for H27, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35 and 37.the H37 having a 52-in shaft with a 15-in dia prop with pitch of 16-in. Don't know if this covers you model though. Page is not well reproduced and hard to read - use caution.

Interesting rule of thumb there states "when going from 2 blade prop to 3 blade prop drop 2" in diameter. Pitch stays the same".

it will not go in from the out side because the coupler will not go through the stuffing box it will have to be in stalled from the inside or you could have them make it with a split coupler...but that may be a little more money

I already have the shaft free from the coupler. It freed itself during the trip after it ate the key. I have it tied so it doesn't slip back and hit the rudder now.

I am pretty sure the coupler needs replaced also. The lip of the coupler was scuffed up pretty good also. I haven't taken that off yet. I didn't want to get too involved in it until I could get it on the hard.
